Promoting Exclusive Breastfeeding: Protecting Maternal & Child Health
Optimal nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life sets the foundation for a child’s lifelong health and development. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), starting breastfeeding within the first hour of life and practicing exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is one of the single most powerful ways to protect infants from life-threatening infections, malnutrition, and developmental delays.
During the first six months, infants require no other foods or liquids not even water except for essential Vitamin D drops or prescribed medical supplements.
The Gap: Why Immediate Action is Needed
Despite the clear health benefits, global and national breastfeeding rates remain dangerously low due to cultural misconceptions, lack of healthcare access, and insufficient community support:
- 1st Hour Initiation: Out of 135 million babies born each year, only 42% are breastfed within their first hour of life.
- Exclusive 6 Months: Only 38% of infants globally are exclusively breastfed for the recommended six months.
- Continued Breastfeeding: Just 58% of mothers continue breastfeeding up to two years of age or beyond.
Breastfeeding is rarely just an individual choice it requires a strong, surrounding support network. Without encouragement and guidance from healthcare professionals, counselors, families, employers, and community leaders, mothers face overwhelming barriers to success.

Our Solution: Community-Led Breastfeeding Education
At KOFA Africa, we are closing this critical awareness gap through targeted, rural outreach and maternal education campaigns.
We work directly within rural and underserved communities to build environments where mothers feel empowered, educated, and supported to practice exclusive breastfeeding:
- Rural Maternal Workshops: We conduct hands-on education sessions in rural health clinics and community hubs, teaching expectant and new mothers about proper latching techniques, milk production, and the immunological benefits of early breast milk (colostrum).
- Dispelling Myths: We partner with local leaders and elders to address widespread myths regarding infant feeding, emphasizing that breast milk provides 100% of the hydration and nutrients an infant needs for the first six months.
- Community & Family Engagement: We engage husbands, grandmothers, and community health workers to establish a strong household support system, ensuring mothers have the physical and emotional backing they need.

Driving Lifelong Impact for SDG 2 & SDG 3
By raising exclusive breastfeeding rates in rural communities, KOFA Africa directly contributes to reducing infant mortality, preventing childhood stunting, and lowering long-term healthcare costs for families.
Our efforts support UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by ensuring every child gets the healthiest possible start to life.
